Program Overview

The Medical Biochemical Genetics Training Program at Emory University School of Medicine offers a comprehensive and stimulating learning experience. The program is designed for physicians who have successfully completed a residency in medical genetics or a combined program with medical genetics.


Program Details

The program is a one-year, fully funded, ACGME accredited fellowship that includes:


  • 41 weeks of intense experience in the outpatient and inpatient evaluation and care of patients with metabolic disorders
  • Four weeks of clinical biochemical genetics laboratory training
  • Four weeks of research
  • Three weeks' vacation

Faculty and Resources

The program is led by a team of seven medical geneticists with broad experience in clinical genetics, metabolism, and clinical trials. The large catchment area, including the State of Georgia, and parts of Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida, ensures the trainee of broad exposure to rare diseases in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The program also has a dedicated Clinical Trials Group and a premier genetic counseling training program.


Research and Clinical Experience

The program provides opportunities for research and clinical experience, including:


  • Over 5000 outpatient visits and 800 inpatient consultations a year
  • Newborn screening follow-up contract for the state of Georgia
  • Participation in pilot programs for new disorders
  • Opportunities to partake in over 25 active clinical trials
  • Attendance and presentation at national meetings, such as ASHG, ACMG, or SIMD
  • Attendance at the North American Metabolic Academy
