Program Overview


Master of Science (MSc) in Global Development

The MSc in Global Development at the University of Copenhagen is a two-year programme taught in English. The programme provides advanced theoretical and in-the-field training, focusing on the complexities of globalization and its impact on regions within the Global South.

Admission and Application

To apply for admission, applicants must have completed a qualifying bachelor's degree or a similar Danish or international degree programme assessed to be relevant. The application portal is open from 16 January to 1 March for EU applicants and from 15 November to 15 January for non-EU applicants.


Academic Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements:


  • A bachelor's degree in anthropology, economics, geography, geoinformatics, natural resources, political science, public health, sociology, or urban, energy, and environmental planning from a Danish university, or a bachelor's degree from a recognized university equivalent to the above BSc degrees.
  • The bachelor's degree must contain a minimum of 15 ECTS of qualitative and/or quantitative methods.
  • English language proficiency corresponding to at least the Danish upper secondary school 'English level B.'

Language Requirements

Applicants are required to document that they fulfill the language requirement English B, unless they have a legal right of admission to the programme they are applying for.


Qualitative and/or Quantitative Research Methods Requirement

Applicants to the MSc in Global Development must prove that their qualifying Bachelor's degree contains a minimum of 15 ECTS credits in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods within the Social Sciences.


Programme Structure

The first year consists of seven compulsory courses, including a mandatory field course in a low or middle-income country. The second year is a year of specialization, with the fourth semester devoted to the master's thesis.


Elective Courses

In the third semester, students can choose from various elective courses within different thematic areas, such as climate, urbanization, migration, humanitarian aid, and more.


Study Abroad

It is possible to study abroad as part of the MSc in Global Development. Students may choose to study abroad for one semester or for a shorter period, such as attending a summer school.


Internship

As an MSc in Global Development student, there is the opportunity to do an internship as part of the programme. The internship may take up 15, 22.5, or 30 ECTS of the third semester of studies.


Field Course

The field course, 'Interdisciplinary Field Research,' builds on previous courses, especially 'Advanced Research Methods in the Social Sciences.' This course takes these 'methods' into actual 'techniques' in the field.


Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the master's programme, graduates will obtain the title Master of Science in Global Development. As a graduate, you will be able to identify and critically analyze key factors and forces shaping the livelihoods and well-being of individuals, populations, and societies at global, regional, national, and local levels.
