Program Overview

Master of Science (MSc) in Landscape Architecture

The Master of Science (MSc) in Landscape Architecture is a two-year programme that prepares students to work with landscape architecture to create sustainable and just cities and landscapes that support all life. The programme is taught in English and offers two specialisations: Urban Design and Landscape Design.

About the Programme

The programme provides students with the theoretical and methodological foundations of landscape architecture, as well as the skills to design, plan, and manage landscapes with an emphasis on sustainability, democracy, and quality of life for all. The programme combines an international outlook with a strong connection to Danish professional practice and draws on a long, internationally recognised tradition of innovative landscape design, urban design, and planning in Denmark.

Admission and Application

To apply for admission to the programme, students must have completed a qualifying bachelor's degree or a similar Danish or international degree programme that is assessed to be relevant. The application deadline for Danish applicants and applicants from within the EU, EEA, and Switzerland is 1 March, while the deadline for applicants from outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland is 15 January.

Academic Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor with legal right of admission: Students with a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Copenhagen are granted legal right of admission and guaranteed a place on the Master's programme in Landscape Architecture if they apply in time to begin within 3 years of the completion of their Bachelor's degree.
  • Bachelor programmes that fulfil the academic requirements: Students with a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, or Engineering (Architecture and Design with specialisation in Architecture and Urban Design) from a Danish or international university may be eligible for admission.
  • Other Danish or international education: Students with a Bachelor's degree other than those listed above may be eligible for admission if their programme includes a minimum of 60 ECTS credits within design courses, 15 ECTS credits within ecology courses, and 7.5 ECTS credits of courses in philosophy of science.

Language Requirements

Students are required to document that they fulfil the language requirement English B, unless they have a legal right of admission to the programme.

Programme Structure

The MSc programme consists of 1-2 compulsory courses, a number of restricted elective and elective courses, and a thesis. The programme is taught in English, and students can choose between two specialisations: Urban Design and Landscape Design.

Specialisations

  • Urban Design: This specialisation focuses on the design and planning of urban spaces, with an emphasis on sustainability, democracy, and quality of life for all. Students will learn about theories of urban design, urban ecosystems, and design by management.
  • Landscape Design: This specialisation focuses on the design and planning of landscapes, with an emphasis on sustainability, democracy, and quality of life for all. Students will learn about theories and methods in landscape architecture, landscape and restoration ecology, and nature perception.

Course Tables

The programme structure can be found in the course tables, which outline the compulsory and elective courses for each specialisation.

Master's Thesis

The Master's thesis is a 4-6.5 month research project that concludes the programme. Students can choose to write a thesis worth 30 or 45 ECTS credits, depending on their specialisation and interests.

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the programme, students will obtain the title Master of Science in Landscape Architecture. The programme will equip students with research-based design approaches and state-of-the-art scientific knowledge to address current socio-ecological challenges in cities and landscapes.
