Program Overview

Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a course titled "Sustainability and Data Processing" (LSLS20176U) as part of its Skov- og Landskabsingeniør (Forest and Landscape Engineering) program. This course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of sustainability, data processing, and statistical methods.

Course Description

The course focuses on three main elements:

  • Skovcertificering (Forest Certification): Introduction to forest certification as a tool for ensuring sustainability, including the most commonly used certifications in Danish forestry, such as PEFC, FSC, and SBP.
  • Bæredygtig økonomi (Sustainable Economy): Insights into circular economy, including design for reuse and recycling, product lifespan, reuse, and sharing economy.
  • Databehandling og metodeforståelse (Data Processing and Method Understanding): Introduction to basic statistical methods and concepts.

Course Objectives

The overall objective of the course is to familiarize students with data processing, statistical basics, and academic writing. The course aims to achieve the following learning objectives:

  • Knowledge: Students will gain knowledge about forest certifications, sustainable economy, and data processing.
  • Skills: Students will be able to perform screenings related to wood chip production, identify documentation requirements for different certification schemes, establish a dataset, and conduct basic statistical analyses.
  • Competencies: Students will be able to engage in dialogue with professionals and forest owners about certification, analyze and develop cases for sustainable models, and discuss their written assignments.

Teaching Materials and Methods

The course material consists of literature, practical cases, and assignments. Data from other courses will also be used for processing. The teaching methods include self-study, lectures, group work, and project work based on the three main modules.

Examination and Assessment

The course concludes with a written assignment in small groups, where students demonstrate their competencies in academic writing and data processing. The examination is a written on-site exam with multiple-choice questions, and the assessment is based on a 7-point scale.
