Program Overview
Program Details
The University of Copenhagen offers a course in Biokemi, Odontologi (Biochemistry, Odontology) as part of its Bachelor's program in Odontology.
Course Description
The course aims to provide students with a fundamental understanding of biochemical processes and their regulation in living organisms, as well as the biokemiske processes that lead to dental diseases, including caries.
Course Content
The course covers the following topics:
- Metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins
- Theory of purification methods and blood coagulation
- Biokemiske processes that lead to dental diseases, including caries
- Composition of teeth and the effect of bacterial metabolism on their composition
Learning Objectives
After completing the course, students should be able to:
- Explain the importance and relevance of biochemistry in relation to clinical teaching in odontology
- Describe the principles and applications of various biokemiske methods
- Identify and present biokemiske problemstillinger to other healthcare professionals, particularly dentists and dental hygienists
Prerequisites
The course requires students to have passed the following exams:
- Basal humanbiologi and kroppens kemiske fundament
- Tandmorfologi
- Tændernes udvikling and mikroskopiske struktur
- Medicinsk celle- and vævsbiologi
- Cellulær neurofysiologi
Recommended Prerequisites
A basic understanding of chemistry, both inorganic and organic, is recommended.
Teaching Methods
The course is taught through dialog-based group instruction.
Workload
The course has a total workload of 152 hours, consisting of:
- Lectures: 10 hours
- Group instruction: 34 hours
- Preparation: 104 hours (estimated)
- Exam: 4 hours
Assessment
The course is assessed through a written exam with supervision, lasting 4 hours. The exam requires students to demonstrate their understanding of biokemiske processes and their ability to identify and present biokemiske problemstillinger.
Exam Requirements
To pass the exam, students must have passed the required exams listed above.
Allowed Aids
Only certain aids are allowed during the exam, including:
- Human metabolism maps
- Access to Mathtype or Maple
Grading
The course is graded on a 7-point scale, with external censorship.
Course Information
The course is taught in Danish and has a capacity of 80 students, reserved for odontology students. The course is offered in the spring semester and has a duration of 1 semester.
Responsible Faculty
The course is offered by the Odontologisk Institut, under the Det Sundhedsvidenskabelige Fakultet.
