The University of Copenhagen offers a comprehensive program in Oral Microbiology, designed to equip students with in-depth knowledge of the subject. This program is part of the Bachelor's degree in Odontology and is a mandatory course for students in their 4th semester.
Program Description
The program focuses on general bacteriology, virology, and mycology, as well as the properties of relevant microorganisms, including pathogenic conditions, immunology, and the microbiota of the oral cavity. Students will also learn about dental biofilms, plaque, and clinical hygiene, as well as antibiotics and resistance.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Explain the general and supplementary infection control procedures to prevent the spread of infection in dental clinics
- Describe the carriers and routes of transmission of relevant microorganisms
- Explain hand hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment and clinical clothing
- Describe methods for sterilization, disinfection, and cleaning, as well as control of these methods
- Explain the principles of antimicrobial agents and their effects and side effects
Program Structure
The program consists of lectures, dialogue-based group teaching, exercises, and tests. The total workload is estimated to be 138 hours, including:
- Lectures: 19 hours
- Group teaching: 13 hours
- Preparation: 82 hours
- Exercises: 24 hours
Assessment
The program has two exams:
- Exam 1 (Course Certificate): a written assignment with a pass/fail grade
- Exam 2 (SODB24012E): a written on-site exam with a 7-point grading scale
Admission Requirements
Formal requirements for admission include:
- Exam in basic human biology and the chemical foundation of the body
- Exam in tooth morphology
- Exam in tooth development and microscopic structure
- Exam in medical cell and tissue biology
- Exam in cellular neurophysiology
Recommended prerequisites include participation in a course in biochemistry.
