Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a course in first aid, Odontologi, as part of its Bachelor's program in odontology. The course is mandatory for first-semester students.


Course Description

The course aims to equip students with the skills to assess a patient's general condition and consciousness level. Students will acquire in-depth knowledge of first aid and be able to provide it. The course covers topics such as patient assessment, principles for treating bleeding, burns, frostbite, and fractures, as well as providing first aid. Emphasis is placed on the connection between basic sciences and patient treatment.


Learning Objectives

After completing the course, students are expected to be able to:


  • Explain the four main points of first aid
  • Explain the ABC assessment principle
  • Explain the rescue chain (for first aid/emergencies)
  • Explain the causes of unconsciousness
  • Explain shock prevention
  • Explain first aid for drowning, chest injuries, internal and external bleeding, head injuries, burns and acid burns, electrical accidents, epilepsy, poisoning, diabetes, and primary wound treatment
  • Explain psychological first aid
  • Explain emergency evacuation
  • Describe the procedure for alerting in case of an unconscious injured person
  • Explain the alerting of 1-1-2 in case of cardiac arrest

Skills

  • Perform correct procedures to clinically diagnose cardiac arrest
  • Perform effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Apply pressure bandages
  • Use a defibrillator safely by following the defibrillator's instructions
  • Provide primary treatment for foreign bodies in the airways
  • Place injured persons in a stable side position

The course includes dialog-based group teaching, lectures, exercises, and clinical demonstrations.
