Program Overview

Program Description

The program, titled "Klinisk oral fysiologi 2" (Clinical Oral Physiology 2), focuses on local and general disorders related to Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), including differential diagnoses. It builds upon the foundation established in Clinical Oral Physiology 1, covering topics such as reduced or impaired jaw function, altered occlusal conditions, facial pain, and headache, which can be symptoms of degenerative diseases in the temporomandibular joint and myalgia/myositis in the masticatory muscles.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the program, students are expected to:

• Explain local and general disorders related to TMD
• Discuss observation and pharmacological, physiotherapeutic, or occlusal therapy for the most common forms of TMD and general disorders with TMD
• Explain age-related variation and change in the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint, and dental system and their significance for temporomandibular dysfunction and treatment
• Discuss differential diagnostic considerations for impaired jaw function, altered occlusal conditions, tooth wear, facial pain, and headache
• Discuss indications, modes of action, and prognosis for treatment

Competences

Students will acquire competences to:

• Recognize, register, interpret, and react appropriately to deviations in the clinical picture that suggest a different background for symptoms and findings than degenerative diseases in the temporomandibular joint and myalgia/myositis in the masticatory muscles
• Evaluate the need for supplementary examinations
• Assess disease characteristics and examinations to identify conditions with similar symptoms and findings but with a different background than degenerative diseases in the temporomandibular joint and myalgia/myositis in the masticatory muscles, and evaluate the need for referral to another instance
• Inform about the conditions based on their natural course
• Observe or initiate, perform, or prescribe pharmacological, physiotherapeutic, or occlusal therapy for the most common forms of TMD and general disorders with TMD
• Organize and comply with the requirements for clinical hygiene
• Create a good working environment for fellow students and all employee groups, including compliance with the SUND ethical code
• Give the patient confidence in the treatment situation through responsible behavior and communication

Formal Requirements for Enrollment

The program requires completion of Clinical Oral Physiology 1.

Teaching Methods

The program employs dialog-based group teaching, lectures, clinical exercises, and conferences.

Notes

The program concludes with a course certificate and is evaluated through an examination in clinical oral physiology and an OSKE examination.

Examination 2 (SODB16066E)

• Points: 7.5 ECTS
• Examination form: Written on-site examination, 3 hours with supervision.
• Examination requirements: Course in Clinical Oral Physiology 2
• Aids: No aids allowed
• Assessment form: 7-point scale
• Censorship form: External censorship
• Re-examination:
  • For 10 or fewer students enrolled in the re-examination: Oral examination, 20 minutes, with preparation, and no aids allowed.

Criteria for Assessment

To achieve the course certificate, students must demonstrate:

• Knowledge of local and general disorders related to TMD
• Ability to discuss differential diagnostic considerations
• Competence to recognize and react to deviations in the clinical picture

To achieve a grade of 12, students must demonstrate:

• Ability to explain the concept of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and discuss epidemiological and etiological aspects of the most common forms of TMD
• Knowledge of characteristic symptoms and findings of degenerative diseases in the temporomandibular joint and myalgia/myositis in the masticatory muscles
• Ability to discuss indications, modes of action, and prognosis for treatment of TMD
• Competence to combine knowledge and concepts regarding the occurrence of TMD in the population, predisposing, initiating, and maintaining factors, disease development, and anatomical, imaging, and functional changes.
