Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics
Program Overview
Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics
About the Programme
The Master of Science in Mathematics programme provides students with a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and techniques, enabling them to tackle complex problems in various fields. The programme offers a high degree of academic freedom, allowing students to design a course of study that matches their preferred career track.
Admission and Application
To apply for admission to this master's degree programme, students must have completed a qualifying bachelor's degree or a similar Danish or international degree programme. The application process involves submitting documentation, including transcripts, diplomas, and language proficiency test results.
Academic Admission Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Copenhagen (with legal right of admission)
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Aarhus University or Aalborg University (with specific course requirements)
- Other Danish or international education (with specific course requirements, including mathematical analysis, linear algebra, and geometry)
Language Requirements
- English B (unless the student has a legal right of admission to the programme)
Application Deadlines
- 1 March for study start in September (for EU, EEA, and Swiss applicants)
- 15 January for study start in September (for non-EU, EEA, and Swiss applicants)
- 15 October for study start in February (for applicants with legal right of admission)
Programme Structure
The programme consists of restricted elective courses, elective courses, and a master's thesis. Students can choose from a wide range of courses, including algebra, analysis, geometry, topology, and didactics of mathematics.
Course Table
- Restricted elective courses: 60 ECTS
- Elective courses: 30 ECTS
- Master's thesis: 30 ECTS
Master's Thesis
The master's thesis is a research-based project that allows students to work in more detail within one of the themes they focused on in their course of study. The thesis is often written in association with one of the Department's research teams.
Career Opportunities
MSc graduates in mathematics have many different job opportunities, including:
- Research positions
- Teaching positions in upper-secondary schools
- Jobs in the private sector (e.g., pension companies, banks, consultancy companies)
- Jobs in the public sector
Competence Description
Graduates in mathematics will be able to:
- Conduct independent, stringent argumentation
- Structure a study of open mathematical issues
- Define mathematical disciplines in relation to each other
- Take responsibility for their own professional development and specialisation
Student Life
The University of Copenhagen offers a high-quality education in English, a flexible study structure, excellent facilities, and an international study environment. Students can participate in various social activities, including introduction days, welcome programmes, and career workshops.
Location
