Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a comprehensive program in Film and Media Studies, with a focus on fiction theory and analysis. The program is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of fiction in various media formats.


Program Details

  • The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of fiction theory and analysis, including the analysis of audiovisual fiction works, characterization and interpretation of different fiction forms, and the description of narrative forms and genres across different media platforms.

Course Content

    • Central theoretical concepts related to fiction, with a focus on audiovisual media in long, serial, and short formats, as well as in computer games.
    • The relationship between style, narration, genre, and emotions in a given context, and their impact on the viewer's fiction experience.
    • Social, cultural, and psychological aspects of reception and use of fiction.
    • Typical production, distribution, and institutional conditions for fiction genres, including the significance of digitalization and discussions of art and popular culture.
    • Different methods and approaches within fiction theory and analysis, including qualitative and quantitative methods and changes to these as a result of digitalization.

Learning Outcomes

  • The program aims to provide students with the following learning outcomes:
    • Knowledge and understanding of central theoretical concepts related to fiction.
    • Skills in analyzing audiovisual fiction works from a self-chosen theoretical perspective, methodological approach, and context.
    • Competences in applying theories and concepts in a concrete and limited analysis.
    • Ability to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of specific fiction theories and analysis methods in relation to concrete problem areas.
    • Ability to communicate theoretical-analytical problem areas and insights related to fiction orally and in writing.

Teaching Methods

  • The program uses a range of teaching methods, including:
    • Class teaching with discussion, individual presentations, and group work.
    • Reading of Danish and English scientific literature.
    • Active participation in class, including at least 75% attendance and 2-3 approved exercises.

Assessment

  • The program is assessed through a combination of:
    • Active participation in class.
    • Approved exercises.
    • A final exam.
  • The final exam is assessed on a 7-point scale, with no external censorship.
  • The exam period is in June, with re-exams in August.
