Course Description

The course "Styrketræning (PT-Styrke)" is a 7.5 ECTS course offered by the University of Copenhagen. The course consists of a lecture series and a practical part, where students will be introduced to various training forms and methods for evaluating strength. The practical part of the course includes exercises that focus on both training and evaluation of strength.

Course Objectives

The specific objectives of the course are:

  • To gain theoretical knowledge of different forms of strength training and strength tests
  • To gain general knowledge of the physiological and morphological adaptations that accompany strength training
  • To gain general knowledge of the health-related effects of strength training and how it can be performance-enhancing
  • To gain knowledge of the effects of strength training on specific populations (including different age groups)
  • To gain knowledge of the functional transferability of increased muscle strength

Competencies

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the factors that underlie differences in muscle strength and training-induced adaptations
  • Analyze and discuss the choice of training and test methods in relation to specific populations and scientific problem statements
  • Integrate this knowledge to understand and discuss causal relationships and acquire specific, detailed knowledge of theories/mechanisms relevant to strength in a specific context
  • Discuss the extent and significance of functional transferability of strength changes
  • Critically evaluate existing literature and assess experimental work in relation to existing literature and work physiology

Skills

Students will be able to:

  • Select and demonstrate practical strength training exercises that engage the body's larger muscle groups
  • Design and conduct different forms of strength training and perform functional strength tests and simple laboratory tests
  • Design and conduct (simple) experimental studies that test a relevant problem statement related to strength training and discuss it in relation to existing physiological knowledge

Teaching Materials

The teaching materials consist of textbook chapters, review articles, and original research articles.

Recommended Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of physiology, including work physiology involving muscle and neurophysiology.

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures, group discussions, practical exercises, and experimental work, as well as visits and exercises at relevant external institutions.

Workload

The estimated workload for the course is:

  • Lectures: 24 hours
  • Preparation: 100 hours
  • Theoretical exercises: 14 hours
  • Practical exercises: 10 hours
  • Excursions: 8 hours
  • Project work: 50 hours
  • Total: 206 hours

Feedback

Students will receive ongoing feedback during the course, as well as feedback on the final exam.

Examination

The examination is a 25-minute oral exam based on a written assignment. The written assignment can be individual or in groups of up to 4 students.

Examination Requirements

It is mandatory to submit the written assignment to participate in the oral exam.

Allowed Aids

Only certain aids are allowed during the exam.

Assessment

The assessment is based on a 7-point scale, and the exam is externally censored.

Re-examination

The re-examination is the same as the ordinary examination.
