Introduction

The University of Copenhagen offers a course titled "Philosophy of Sports Science (VtIdr)" as part of its Bachelor's program in Sports and Physical Activity.

  • Analyze, discuss, and critically reflect on the methods and role of sports science in society
  • Demonstrate professional self-understanding and understanding of sports science in relation to neighboring fields and disciplines
  • Discuss different perceptions of what science is, including implications of data-intensive research

Students will acquire skills in:


  • Identifying ethical and societal problems related to sports science
  • Identifying methodological and epistemological problems in relation to sports science
  • Identifying violations of good scientific practice in relation to sports science

Knowledge

Students will gain knowledge to:


  • Describe selected ethical theories, including deontological and utilitarian argumentation forms
  • Describe central scientific theoretical concepts and problems relevant to critical reflection on sports science as a science
  • Describe the societal role and significance of sports science, as well as its historical and institutional background
  • Describe scientific processes in sports science, including data-intensive research
  • Describe norms for good scientific practice, with a focus on problems relevant to research and education in sports
