Introduction

The University of Copenhagen offers a course in Geografiske Informations Systemer & kartografi (GIS & Cartography), which provides an introduction to the theory and concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and cartography, as well as practical applications of software for GIS analysis and cartographic production.

Course Content

The course covers the following topics:

  • GIS software - ArcGIS
  • Digital geodata
  • Data models - vector GIS and raster GIS
  • Organization of geodata - database and geodatabase
  • Projections, coordinate systems, and georeferencing
  • GIS analysis - overlay analysis, network analysis, buffer analysis, cost surface analysis, and multi-criteria analysis
  • Thematic cartography - communication of GIS analysis
  • Cartographic basic concepts and layout

Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:

  • Knowledge:
    • GIS software
    • Digital geodata
    • Data models
    • Organization of geodata
    • Projections, coordinate systems, and georeferencing
    • GIS analysis
    • Thematic cartography
    • Cartographic basic concepts and layout
  • Skills:
    • Apply a specific data model to represent an abstraction of the real world in digital form in a GIS
    • Define a spatial reference for collected observations on the 3-dimensional Earth
    • Explain the structure and use of a relational database for property data of registered phenomena
    • Apply generic GIS analysis tools for calculations of spatial properties for geographic information
    • Apply basic cartographic principles and methods for digital graphic communication of thematic geographic information
  • Competencies:
    • Discuss, categorize, and select relevant and valid GIS strategies and analysis for solving spatially related problems within geographic and related fields

Teaching Methods

The course is taught through lectures and exercises, with a focus on practical applications and hands-on experience with GIS software.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a written exam, with the following criteria:
