Program Overview

Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a comprehensive program in Biodiversity, providing students with a deep understanding of the subject matter.

Program Description

The Biodiversity program is presented as an ecological discipline that deals with patterns of species number, frequency, and distribution over temporal, spatial, and environmental scales. The program explains and tests these patterns, covering the processes behind species emergence, spread, and extinction in an evolutionary and historical context. Biodiversity is viewed as the biological content of ecosystems, highlighting how ecosystem function, resistance, resilience, and species turnover in response to disturbance are related to biodiversity.

Program Objectives

The program aims to provide students with:

  • Knowledge and theoretical understanding of the mechanisms behind species emergence, development, and extinction in an evolutionary and historical context.
  • Knowledge and theoretical understanding of the patterns and mechanisms regulating species number and dominance in the environment.
  • Understanding of the importance of biodiversity for ecosystem stability, resistance, and the services they provide to humans.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity's significance in society and its role in nature conservation, outdoor activities, and tourism.
  • Understanding of how human activity affects biodiversity globally, in Europe, and in Denmark.
  • Knowledge of how global warming and species spread are expected to impact national and international biodiversity.

Program Structure

The program consists of:

  • Lectures
  • Mandatory exercises
  • A small written essay project
  • Group work

Assessment

The program is assessed through:

  • A written on-site exam with supervision
  • Three types of questions: multiple choice, calculation, and essay
  • A combined grade weighted according to the percentages of the three question types

Program Requirements

To participate in the exam, students must have their 3-5 exercise reports and one essay project approved no later than one week before the start of the exam.

Allowed Aids

All aids are allowed except Generative AI and internet access. Computers are provided by the university's exam house.

Grading

The program uses a 7-point scale, with the grade 12 given for an excellent performance that demonstrates exhaustive fulfillment of the subject's objectives.
