Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Copenhagen offers a Master's program in Biology with a focus on Human Parasitology. This program is designed to educate students on human ecto- and endo-parasites, including protozoans and helminths, as well as the vectors of parasites.
Program Details
Course Description
The course, SBIK10200U Human Parasitology, aims to provide students with an introduction to the occurrence and importance of human parasitic diseases. The program covers the epidemiology, diagnosis, mapping, control, and surveillance of infections, as well as parasite-host interactions.
Learning Outcomes
The program aims to provide students with the following knowledge, skills, and competences:
- Knowledge: Describe the most important groups of human parasites, explain principles of disease impact estimation, and define the impact of geographical and ecological variables on the occurrence of infections.
- Skills: Critically evaluate studies on human parasitic diseases, use knowledge on transmission and risk factors in writing and oral presentations, and perform overall analysis of transmission and risk factors.
- Competences: Transfer the searching for relevant information, critical evaluation of this information, and free discussion during group work for use in future courses, thesis writing, and work environments.
Literature
The program uses selected parts of "Foundations of Parasitology" by L. S. Roberts and J. Janovy, as well as scientific papers.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The program employs a mixture of lectures, small group exercises, laboratory demonstrations, and laboratory exercises. Discussion of peer-reviewed papers in groups and in plenum is also used throughout the course.
Workload
The program has a total workload of 206 hours, broken down into:
- Lectures: 40 hours
- Preparation: 70 hours
- Theory exercises: 33 hours
- Practical exercises: 25 hours
- Study Groups: 25 hours
- Guidance: 12.5 hours
- Exam: 0.5 hours
Assessment
The program uses oral examination, with students selecting one of four scientific papers to discuss. The student can bring their version of the exam papers, including written notes.
