Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Copenhagen offers a comprehensive range of programs, including Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, and Continuing Education. The following details outline the specifics of the Advanced Bacteriology 2 course.
Course Description
The Advanced Bacteriology 2 course is part of the MSc Programme in Biochemistry, MSc Programme in Biology, MSc Programme in Biology with a minor subject, and MSc Programme in Molecular Biomedicine. The course focuses on three main themes:
- Theme 1: Bacterial physiology, including metabolic diversity and adaptations to life as single-celled organisms.
- Theme 2: Bacterial interactions, covering interactions with plants, viruses, and symbionts in animals.
- Theme 3: Pathogenic bacteria in humans, including adaptations to pathogenicity, evolution of pathogenic bacteria, and disease mechanisms.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Describe the ability of bacteria to live as single-cell organisms or in intimate associations with eukaryotes.
- Describe the metabolic diversity of bacteria.
- Describe the molecular basis of bacterial mutualistic symbiosis with a selection of animals and plants.
- Evaluate bacterial genomic structure, adaptations, and physiology in relation to bacterial interactions with other organisms, including humans.
- Analyze, put into perspective, and criticize the primary scientific literature.
- Perform effective oral presentation of acquired knowledge and ideas.
Literature and Academic Qualifications
The course literature is available on Absalon. Introductory courses in molecular biology and microbiology, as well as the course Advanced Bacteriology 1, are recommended. Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree are also recommended.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course includes two 3-hour discussion classes and self-test, follow-up discussion, and one double lecture. The workload is distributed as follows:
- Lectures: 21 hours
- Preparation: 142 hours
- Seminar: 42 hours
- Exam: 1 hour
- Total: 206 hours
Exam and Assessment
The exam is an oral examination, 20 minutes without preparation, based on the learning outcomes. All exam questions will be published 10 days before the exam. To be allowed to the final exam, students must have participated actively in the course and performed a satisfactory oral presentation based on a scientific paper. No aids are allowed during the exam, and it is graded on a 7-point scale with external censorship.
