Program Details: NIGB16000U Byplan studio – Strategi og design 1

Course Description

Byplan Studio 1 is a course that prepares students for the Bachelor's project in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. The course focuses on a project area, which can be a part of a municipality, a city district, a harbor area, a quarter, etc. In collaboration with local actors, students investigate problem areas and challenges and propose solutions that range from vision and strategy to concrete design proposals.


Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is for students to learn:


  • To understand complex problem areas in urban and landscape development
  • To communicate these in a dialogue with others and in text, diagrams, maps, drawings, and photos
  • To develop visions and strategies that respond to the experienced problem areas

Course Content

The course includes:


  • Infographic (data visualization, maps, and diagrams)
  • Site analysis (photo registration, transects, structure analysis, observations, and interviews)
  • Strategies (spatial main grips, strategic impacts, communication with citizens about solution proposals)

Teaching Methods

The course includes:


  • Lectures and literature introducing urban design and planning, urban actors, and citizen involvement
  • Training in methods for registration and analysis, as well as the development of plan strategies and design proposals
  • Great emphasis on guidance and discussion with teachers
  • Fieldwork and meeting with the city's users are central elements

Assessment

  • The course is assessed based on a portfolio (tasks based on project work prepared individually or in groups)
  • The portfolio is submitted during the exam week
