Program Overview
The University of Copenhagen offers a course titled "Gender and Sexuality in the Middle East" (HMØK0105EU). This course explores the construction and experience of gender and sexuality in the Middle East, drawing on historical, sociological, and anthropological research in and on the region.
Course Description
The course provides a systematic reading and analytical discussion of the political, economic, and cultural structures that inform femininity and masculinity in the region. It equips students with a critical understanding of methodologies and theoretical frameworks employed in the study of gender as applied to research on Middle Eastern societies.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, students can demonstrate:

- Skills in analyzing a chosen topic by applying one or more scientific methods

Teaching and Learning Methods
The course has a seminar format, which requires a high degree of student activity. It includes lectures, discussions of texts, and group work.

Exam Information
There are three exam options:

- Exam 3 (for international exchange students BA): Credit - 15 ECTS, Type of assessment - Other
Criteria for Exam Assessment
The academic targets for the exams include demonstrating knowledge of significant issues within an academic topic, skills in positioning the chosen topic within a relevant theoretical framework, and competencies in deploying academic knowledge in a regional Middle Eastern context.
Syllabus
The student specifies 1,000-1,200 standard pages of secondary literature for Exam 1 and 1,500 pages for Exam 3. The syllabus must be approved by the examiner.
Teaching and Working Methods
The course includes preparation of a written assignment, either during the coursework or based on independent study with accompanying supervision.
Exam Provisions
The form of exam is a take-home assignment, optional subject, with 16-20 standard pages. The exam language is Danish or English, and all aids are permitted.
