Course Description

This course introduces students to the organizational landscape of personalized medicine in Denmark, discussing relevant ethical and legal issues. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the concrete organizational processes involved in the use of biological materials and health data, as well as the ethical implications of storing and applying health data in a Danish context.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students will be able to:

• Describe the organizational landscape for personalized medicine in Denmark and discuss relevant ethical and legal issues.
• Discuss and reflect on how the concept of personalized medicine is applied across different fields.
• Explain the current legislation and structures that create the framework for the collection, storage, clinical and research use, and sharing of biological materials and health data.
• Analyze the ethical implications of storing and applying health data in a Danish context, including the significance of global expectation economies for personalized medicine in Denmark.
• Analyze challenges related to communication about personalized medicine and communicate their knowledge of personalized medicine to patients, colleagues, and other professional groups.

Admission Criteria

To participate in the course, students must meet the following criteria:

• Be educated as a bioanalyst or have a bachelor's degree in health sciences, technology, natural and bio sciences, or a bachelor's degree in social sciences, law, humanities, or similar.
• Have at least 2 years of work experience in a clinical, research, or academic field dealing with issues within personalized medicine.
• It is recommended that students have a high level of English proficiency, as a significant portion of the teaching materials is in English.

Tuition Fee

The tuition fee for the course is DKK 15,000.

Course Structure

The course consists of both physical attendance and online teaching, as well as an examination. Students should expect significant preparation for all parts of the course, including project work.

Course Dates

The course is offered every other spring, with specific dates for physical attendance and examination to be found in the course plan.

Instructor

The course instructor is Professor Mette Nordahl Svendsen, who is a leading expert in understanding the interplay between life science and society. Her research focuses on the relationship between medical technology and society, exploring how new medical technologies are developed and introduced into the healthcare system and change our understandings of and ways of being human.
