Course Description

The course introduces students to central qualitative and quantitative methods in film and media studies. Through exercises and assignments, students have the opportunity to work practically with selected qualitative and quantitative data collection methods (interviews, questionnaires, document and archive studies, observation, and experiments) and analytical approaches (text analysis and statistics). The course is integrated with a special course in TV Meter analysis and Quantitative analysis.


Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with:


  • Knowledge of methodology, particularly the differences between qualitative and quantitative approaches
  • Familiarity with the purpose and application of specific scientific methods
  • Practical experience in collecting and analyzing empirical material using selected methods
  • Competencies in selecting appropriate methods for specific research questions and applying selected methods correctly for data collection and analysis purposes

Course Content

The course material consists of one or more methodological textbooks and research articles within the film and media studies research areas. The material will be in both Danish and English.


Teaching Methods

The course includes group teaching and group work. Throughout the semester, students work on a series of smaller exercises, which may include theoretical exercises, testing of data collection methods, or analytical approaches.
