Program Overview
Program Overview
The Mykologisk feltkursus (Field Mycology) is a course offered by the University of Copenhagen, focusing on the study of fungi and their ecological functions. This course is part of the Skov- og landskabsingeniør (Forestry and Landscape Engineering) and Urban landskabsingeniør (Urban Landscape Engineering) programs but is also open to other students interested in mycology.
Course Description
The course introduces students to the kingdom of fungi, covering various form groups and their ecological roles. It aims to provide students with knowledge about fungi, their identification, and their importance in different ecosystems. The course includes lectures, presentations, and excursions with a focus on collecting, identifying, and registering fungi.
Learning Objectives
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Describe the main characteristics of different fungal form groups
- Identify and describe various ecological functions of fungi
- Relate the ecological functions of fungi to their habitat or ecosystem
- Use identification keys and microscopes for fungal identification
- Evaluate the mycological aspect of biodiversity
Knowledge
Students will gain basic knowledge of:
- Characteristic traits of various fungal form groups
- Different ecological functions within the fungal kingdom
- Indicator species for various natural habitats
Skills
Students will acquire skills in:
- Providing a qualified assessment of a fungal specimen's form group
- Performing fungal identifications using microscopes and identification keys
- Recognizing fungi's occurrence and role in different ecosystems
- Registering fungal findings on the Fungal Atlas portal and using databases to evaluate natural areas
- Identifying important indicator species in different natural habitats
Competences
Students will be able to:
- Evaluate the ecological function of different fungi in their habitat
- Assess the biodiversity value of an area based on its fungal composition
- Include fungi in natural value assessments and area analyses
Teaching Methods
The course will consist of lectures, presentations, and excursions with an emphasis on collecting, identifying, and registering fungi.
Course Materials
Course materials will include books, articles, and podcasts.
Notes
- Students from the Forestry and Landscape Engineering and Urban Landscape Engineering programs are recommended to have completed their first year of study.
- The course will be held at Himmeriggården, Hinnerup, Århus, with arranged communal dining and accommodation available. Participants are responsible for their own food and lodging costs.
Assessment
The course will be assessed through a written assignment submitted at the end of the course. The assignment will be based on excursions and exercises conducted during the course.
