The University of Copenhagen offers a course on Green Roofs and Green Walls, which is part of the Continuing and Professional Education program. The course aims to provide participants with a broad understanding and insight into the possibilities of designing green roofs and planting on decks and walls, particularly in relation to climate adaptation.
Course Description
The course covers the following topics:
- Introduction to green roofs and green walls and their role in climate adaptation in cities
- Technical structures of green roofs and planting on decks and walls
- Introduction to growth media
- Plant knowledge and application on green roofs, decks, and walls
- Biodiversity on green roofs and walls
- Maintenance and quality
- Design, installation, and operation of green roofs
Course Objectives
The objective of the course is for participants to gain a broad understanding and insight into the possibilities of designing green roofs and planting on decks and walls. After completing the course, participants will:
- Have knowledge of growth media, plant selection, and biodiversity
- Have knowledge of existing green roofs and walls
- Have knowledge of expected climate changes in Denmark and the benefits of green roofs as a nature-based solution
- Be able to propose green roofs with different benefits
- Be able to choose materials and plants for green roofs
- Be able to sketch technical structures of green roofs and walls
- Be able to evaluate and quality-assure projects with simple green roofs
- Be able to communicate ideas, solutions, operation, and maintenance at a reflective level
- Be able to engage in professional dialogue with other fields about green roofs
Teaching Methods
The teaching consists of lectures, exercises, excursions, group projects with presentations, and a final written exam with a small plant test.

Examination
- ECTS: 5 ECTS
- Exam form: Written on-site exam, 1 hour with supervision
- Exam details: Written exam containing questions from the course's teaching and curriculum, as well as a small plant test in the course's plant curriculum
- Exam requirements: Participation in a group project that works with the course's content is required. The project is completed with the preparation of a project that is presented on a poster. The poster is presented by the group on the last day of the course. Participation and approval of the project, poster, and presentation are a requirement for being eligible for the written exam.

- Assessment form: 7-point scale
- Censorship form: No external censorship
- Exam period: Exam on the last day of the course
- Re-exam: The exam form on the re-exam may differ from the ordinary exam
