Program Overview

Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a course in Medical Cell and Tissue Biology, Molecular Biomedicine, as part of its Bachelor's program in Molecular Biomedicine. This course is also a required component of the Bachelor's program in Cognitive and Data Science, with a specialization in Neuroscience.

Course Description

The course focuses on the fundamental elements of biochemistry, biophysics, cell and molecular biology, and general histology. The primary objective is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of cell structure and function, as well as the organization of cells in tissues.

Learning Objectives

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the structure and function of intracellular organelles and cell membranes
  • Describe intracellular protein sorting, ligand equilibrium potentials, and membrane potentials
  • Discuss salt and water transport across cell membranes
  • Explain the organization of the cytoskeleton
  • Describe DNA and chromatin structure, DNA replication, and repair
  • Explain transcription and translation, including the regulation of these processes
  • Discuss cell communication and intracellular signaling
  • Explain the cell cycle, cell growth, and cell death
  • Describe cancer biology and development, including the general characteristics of cancer cells
  • Explain the organization of cells and the extracellular matrix in different tissues
  • Describe the tissue-specific structure and function of different cell types, including specialized cells
  • Explain selected cell, tissue, and molecular biological methods
  • Understand the basic principles of applying GAI tools in basic biomedical research

Course Structure

The course consists of lectures, student-activating teaching, and mandatory practical and theoretical exercise instruction (including electronic tests, videos for preparation, and oral presentations).

Assessment

The course is evaluated through participation in teaching and an examination in medical cell and tissue biology. The examination consists of two parts:

  • Eksamen 1 (Undervisningsdeltagelse): Active participation in mandatory preparation hours, laboratory exercises, and oral reporting during follow-up hours.
  • Eksamen 2 (Eksamen): A written on-site exam, including spot questions within microscopy on a PC.
