Program Overview

Program Overview

The program in Geografiske Informations Systemer & kartografi (GIS & Cartography) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and cartography. The program covers theoretical and practical aspects of GIS, including data models, spatial analysis, and cartographic representation.

Program Description

The program gives an introduction to the theory and concepts of GIS and cartography, as well as practical applications of software for GIS analysis and cartographic production. Through a series of practical exercises and assignments, students develop a general knowledge of digital geodata, GIS-based analysis, and the application of these in various professional contexts.

Program Objectives

The program aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Apply a specific data model (raster or vector) to represent an abstraction of the real world in digital form in a GIS.
  • Define a spatial reference for collected observations on the 3-dimensional Earth, so that they can be coordinated with a view to storage in a GIS.
  • Explain the structure and application of a relational database for property data of registered phenomena.
  • Apply generic GIS analysis tools for calculations of spatial properties for geographic information.
  • Apply basic cartographic principles and methods that can be used for digital graphic communication of thematic geographic information.

Program Structure

The program consists of lectures and exercises. The teaching plan is available on the course homepage on Absalon.

Assessment

The program is assessed through a written on-site exam, 2 hours with supervision. The written on-site exam is an ITX exam.
