Program Overview

Course Description
The course provides an introduction to fundamental social geographic concepts and theories, emphasizing the identification and explanation of relevant theories and concepts related to central social geographic topics. The English title of the course is Social Geography – Place, Space and Inequality.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired knowledge about:
- Social inequality and social categorizations
- Spatial units, place understandings, representation of places, and place identity
- Socially sustainable societal development
Students will also develop skills to:
- Explain social geography as a field and scientific discipline
- Discuss the relationship between places and people's attachment to places
- Explain how social differences and inequalities affect and are affected by place and space
- Discuss approaches to social inequality and their spatial expressions
- Explain theories about local communities and debates on group formation
Competencies
Students will be able to analyze and explain central social geographic problems based on central theories and methods, and argue for specific social geographic approaches and methods at a scientific level.

Notes
The course is one of a series of restricted elective courses that allow students to tailor their education in natural geography, social geography, geoinformatics, or environmental geography. The course is identical to the discontinued course NGEA04049U Social Geography. Students who have already passed NGEA04049U cannot take NIGB21032U.
Examination
The examination is a 20-minute oral exam, where the student draws a question from a set of known questions and is examined without preparation. All aids are allowed, and the assessment is based on a 7-point scale.
Re-examination
The re-examination follows the same format as the ordinary examination.
