Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Copenhagen offers a course titled "Media in the Middle East" (HMØK0104EU), which is part of the Master's program in Middle Eastern Studies.
Course Description
Historically, Middle Eastern states have had a strong monopoly on press, radio, and TV, but this is under constant challenge and change with the advent of satellite TV and digital media. While national and often state-controlled media still play a central role in public discourse, digital and/or transnational media reflect global and local complexity, where cultural, political, and religious identities are challenged and negotiated.
The course provides a general introduction to the historical development of Middle Eastern media, highlighting central and fundamental aspects such as media systems, the concept of the public sphere, mediatization, digital media, and transnational surveillance, as well as the significance of new media for regional development, especially after the Arab Spring in 2011.
Course Objectives
The course aims to teach students to understand and analyze different media types and genres based on relevant theoretical and regional knowledge.
Target Audience
The course is designed for students enrolled in the Master's program in Middle Eastern Studies, particularly those with a background in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, or Turkish.
Course Structure
The course has a seminar format, which requires high student activity. It includes lectures, preparation, and individual and collective feedback.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a 15 ECTS point exam, with specific criteria for evaluation.
