Program Overview

Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a range of programs, including the MSc Programme in Biochemistry, MSc Programme in Biology, and MSc Programme in Molecular Biomedicine.

Program Details

Advanced Bacteriology 2

Course Content

The course covers three main themes:

  • Theme 1: Bacterial physiology, including bacterial metabolic diversity and adaptations to life as single-celled organisms.
  • Theme 2: Bacterial interactions, including interactions with plants, viruses, and symbionts in animals.
  • Theme 3: Pathogenic bacteria in humans, including adaptations to pathogenicity, evolution of pathogenic bacteria, and bacterial disease mechanisms.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Describe the ability of bacteria to live as single-cell organisms or in intimate associations with eukaryotes.
  • Describe the metabolic diversity of bacteria.
  • Describe the molecular basis of bacterial mutualistic symbiosis with a selection of animals and plants.
  • Evaluate bacterial genomic structure, adaptations, and physiology in relation to bacterial interactions with other organisms, including humans.
  • Analyze, put into perspective, and criticize the primary scientific literature.

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course includes two 3-hour discussion classes and self-test, follow-up discussion, and one double lecture.

Literature

Literature for the course is available on Absalon.

Recommended Prerequisites

Introductory courses in molecular biology and microbiology, as well as the course Advanced Bacteriology 1, are recommended. Academic qualifications equivalent to a BSc degree are also recommended.

Exam

The exam is an oral examination, 20 minutes without preparation. All exam questions will be published 10 days before the exam.

Examination Prerequisites

To be allowed to take the final exam, students must have participated actively in the course and performed a satisfactory oral presentation based on a scientific paper.

Aid

No aids are allowed during the exam.

Marking Scale

The marking scale is a 7-point grading scale.

Censorship Form

The censorship form is external.

Re-exam

The re-exam is the same as the ordinary exam. If the requirement is not fulfilled, students must hand in a scientific paper that must be approved by the teacher no later than three weeks before the re-examination.

Course Type and Workload

The course is a single subject course (day) with a workload of:

  • Lectures: 21 hours
  • Preparation: 142 hours
  • Seminar: 42 hours
  • Exam: 1 hour
  • English: 206 hours

Kursusinformation

The course language is English, and the course number is NBIK15005U. The ECTS is 7.5, and the programme level is Full Degree Master. The duration is 1 block, and the placement is Block 2.

Contracting Department and Faculty

The contracting department is the Department of Biology, and the contracting faculty is the Faculty of Science.
