Program Overview

The University of Copenhagen offers a course titled "Water Supply and Sanitation in Emergencies" as part of its MSc Global Health program. This course is an elective and provides comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of water and sanitation in emergency situations.


Course Description

The course is divided into five main clusters:


  • Anthropological assessment approaches in emergency situations
  • Health and disease transmission in emergency settings
  • Technical and theoretical aspects of water and sanitation
  • Practical aspects of water and sanitation
  • Case study and exam where participants apply knowledge and skills acquired during the course

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of water and sanitation in emergencies, including disease prevention and preparedness. Specifically, they will be able to:


  • Demonstrate knowledge of water and sanitation issues in different settings and accepted approaches/guidelines
  • Analyze and apply this knowledge to assess and prioritize water and sanitation needs in emergency situations
  • Design and develop appropriate water and sanitation strategies to prevent disease outbreaks in emergency situations

Teaching and Learning Methods

The course consists of part-time online learning (e-modules) for the first four weeks, followed by nine days of classroom-based learning in Copenhagen. The online portion includes recorded lectures, readings, limited blog sessions, and online tests. The on-campus part combines lectures, group work, practical exercises, self-study, case studies, presentations, and discussions.


Workload

The course workload is distributed as follows:


  • Lectures: 20 hours
  • Preparation: 30 hours
  • Practical exercises: 18 hours
  • E-Learning: 40 hours
  • Study Groups: 10 hours
  • Exam: 20 hours
  • Total: 138 hours

Assessment

The course is assessed through a written examination (48 hours) with all aids allowed. The marking scale is a 7-point grading scale, and there is no external censorship.
