Program Overview
Program Overview
The University of Copenhagen offers a comprehensive program in Veterinary Zoology, designed to introduce students to the fundamental anatomy of vertebrate groups, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. This program is part of the Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine.
Program Description
The program in Veterinary Zoology aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the basic anatomy of vertebrates and how these groups have adapted to different lifestyles. The course covers the zoological systematic system, the morphological structure of each vertebrate group, and the fundamental principles of developmental biology. Students will also learn to compare the anatomy of specific organ systems across different vertebrate groups.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the program, students are expected to:
- Understand the structure of the zoological systematic system and the placement of production and hobby animals within this system.
- Recognize the morphological characteristics of each vertebrate group.
- Identify the fundamental features of the skeleton and selected organ systems in different vertebrate groups.
- Name and describe common vertebrate species, their relationships, and habitats.
Course Structure
The program consists of lectures and practical exercises, including dissections and demonstrations of preparations. Theoretical tests will also be administered through the Absalon platform.
Workload
The total workload for the program is 82.5 hours, broken down into:
- Examination: 2 hours
- Preparation: 50.5 hours
- Lectures: 18 hours
- Practical exercises: 8 hours
- Theoretical exercises: 4 hours
Assessment
The program is assessed through a written exam, which consists of multiple-choice questions. The exam is 2 hours long and is conducted with supervision.
Evaluation Criteria
To pass the program, students must demonstrate:
- Understanding of the zoological systematic system and the placement of production and hobby animals within this system.
- Knowledge of the morphological characteristics of each vertebrate group.
- Ability to explain how vertebrates have adapted to different lifestyles.
- Ability to handle dissection instruments and apply them to the dissection of various vertebrate groups.
- Ability to evaluate the systematic placement of a given vertebrate species and predict its organ structure.
