Part-time Studies at the Centre of African Studies
The Centre of African Studies offers part-time studies, providing students with the opportunity to gain insight into and understanding of Africa in terms of its development, religion, and social and cultural conditions. Part-time studies at the Centre of African Studies also offer the opportunity to gain linguistic competencies in Kiswahili.
Student Profile
Part-time studies at the Centre of African Studies are designed for individuals who are interested in Africa and seek continuing education at university level. This includes employees of NGOs, the foreign and diplomatic service, or international organisations, as well as consultants, journalists, nurses, and teachers.
Competence Profile
The aim of the courses run by the Centre of African Studies is to develop the participants' ability to work across disciplines in order to take part in co-operative situations that involve a range of different academic and professional competences. Part-time studies at the Centre of African Studies provide private- and public-sector staff with the opportunity to pursue interdisciplinary and internationally oriented continuing education.
Courses
Part-time students are able to choose between all of the thematic courses on offer at the Centre of African Studies and Kiswahili, but cannot enrol for compulsory courses. All optional courses correspond to 7.5 or 15 ECTS. Kiswahili, which lasts two semesters, corresponds to 15 ECTS.
Teaching
Courses at the Centre for African Studies are interdisciplinary, with a particular emphasis on the social-science and humanities disciplines. The study aims to provide in-depth insights into the social and developmental challenges faced by Africa, as well as its religious and cultural conditions. The teaching is in English.

Admission Requirements
Admission to part-time non-degree studies is conditional upon entrance qualifications corresponding to at least a relevant professional bachelor or a relevant bachelor degree. All applications will undergo a specific, individual assessment. Applicants holding a professional bachelor's degree can be admitted if the Study Board for African Studies deems that they have the appropriate educational background and the basic academic qualifications equivalent to the background and qualifications acquired through a bachelor's degree from a university.
Application Deadlines
The deadline for applications for admission to courses in the spring semester is 1 December. The deadline for applications for admission to courses in the autumn semester is 1 June.
Tuition Fees
Participation in part-time studies at the Centre of African Studies is contingent upon payment of fees set by the Faculty of Theology. The current fees for citizens from Denmark, Scandinavia, and EU/EEA countries are DKK 5,250 for a course of 15 ECTS and DKK 2,625 for a course of 7.5 ECTS. There will be an increase in tuition fees from 1 June 2023: the tuition fee for a 7.5 ECTS course is DKK 3,750, and the tuition fee for a 15 ECTS course is DKK 7,500.
Payment Terms
- The participation fee covers costs for teaching as well as 3 exam attempts per course.
- The payment entitles you to follow the tuition in the semester you have paid.
- It is not possible to transfer your place to another or postpone your admission to a later semester if you are prevented from attending.
- You can take the exam for up to one year after payment, but if you want to follow the course again, you will have to pay again.
- It is not possible to access the university's intranet and teaching rooms until your payment has been registered.
- The deadline for timely payment is stated on the invoice.
- If you do not pay before the payment deadline, you risk losing your place on the course.
- You can get the participation fee refunded within the following deadlines:
- 31 August for fall courses
- 31 January for spring courses
- For courses starting in August, the deadline for reimbursement of the participation fee is 31 July.
