Introduction to Hebrew 1

The course provides an introduction to biblical Hebrew, enabling students to work with Old Testament texts in the original language.

Course Objectives

  • In-depth knowledge of Hebrew grammar, including morphology and syntax
  • Familiarity with the central Hebrew vocabulary and tools for its acquisition
  • Ability to read Old Testament texts, both prose and poetry, in the original language

Course Content

The course covers the fundamental features of Hebrew grammar, including word forms and sentence structure. Students will learn to analyze sentences in a text from the Hebrew Old Testament and will be introduced to the use of a dictionary and other tools for vocabulary acquisition.

Preparation

Students are expected to spend part of their preparation time reading and understanding the textbook/grammar explanations. It is recommended to create a personal "mini-grammar" in a notebook, summarizing the grammatical phenomena. The remaining preparation time will be devoted to reading the accompanying shorter exercise texts and learning the most common glosses by heart.
