Introduction to the Texas Robotics Honors Undergraduate Program

The Texas Robotics Honors Undergraduate Program offers a holistic, multidisciplinary robotics education with hands-on research, courses in engineering and computer science, participation in Texas Robotics events, and a close-knit community of future innovators. All students, regardless of experience, are encouraged to apply.

Program Components

Optional Living and Learning Community

Upon entering the University of Texas, students admitted to the program will have the opportunity to join a living and learning community with their program cohort.


Freshman Research Initiative (FRI)

During their freshman year, students will join the largest undergraduate research program in the country through the FRI. This empowers first-year students to engage in real-world robotics research with Texas Robotics faculty. Students can continue their research into later undergraduate years, even outside of the College of Natural Sciences.


Minor in Robotics

Upon admission, students are offered a spot in the Robotics Minor, contingent on academic success. Starting sophomore or junior year, they pursue interdisciplinary robotics studies, including an exclusive "Introduction to Robotics" course that allows them to take robotics courses outside their major and college.


Application and Admission Criteria

To apply, high school applicants must:


  • Apply to one of the following majors at the University of Texas: Aerospace Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computational Engineering, Computer Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Submit an additional short answer essay on their interest in this program.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Question: Can I still complete the robotics minor later in my UT career if I don’t participate in the full undergraduate program in robotics? Answer: Yes. You can apply to the minor the spring of your first and/or second year at UT as long as you are majoring in ASE, COE, CS, ECE, or ME.
  • Question: If I am offered admission into the undergraduate program in robotics, do I have to live in the Robotics Living Learning Community? Answer: No. This is an optional part of the program. The Robotics Living Learning Community will only be available to first-year students in the undergraduate robotics program. Students accepted into the program will be contacted in spring and allowed to opt in or out of the robotics Living Learning Community.
