Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Intervention Master's Program
The Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Intervention Master's Program, offered by the Department of Special Education, provides students with advanced training in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based practices to support students with or at-risk for learning disabilities in reading, mathematics, and writing, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia.
Program Overview
- The program is designed for students who seek to support and serve students with dyslexia and dyscalculia in schools or related educational settings such as clinics, tutoring, and consulting.
- The full program is designed to be completed over two years with a minimum of 36 hours of coursework.
- Courses combine both asynchronous and synchronous learning experiences in a fully online format.
- The program welcomes both full-time (9 credit hours per semester) and part-time (3-6 credit hours per semester) students.

- Doris L Baker: Develops and evaluates interventions and assessments using technology to support the academic success of Latinx students and other students whose home language is not English.
- Nathan Clemens: Works to improve interventions for students with dyslexia and other forms of significant reading difficulty, better understand assessment and assessment practices that best inform instruction, and improve educators' ability to make data-based decisions.
- Christian Doabler: Focuses on the instructional design and efficacy testing of early STEM interventions for at-risk learners, including English learners and students marginalized and underserved communities.
- Sally K Fluhler: Assistant Professor of Instruction.
- Peng Peng: Focuses on embedding high-level cognitive skills (e.g., working memory; executive function) and motivational skills (e.g., growth mindset, anxiety coping) into academic instructions for children with severe learning disabilities.
- Sarah R Powell: Develops and tests interventions for students with mathematics difficulties, emphasizing word-problem solving, mathematics writing, data-based decision making, and the vocabulary within mathematics.
- Jessica R Toste: Focuses on effective interventions for students with and at-risk for reading disabilities, with a focus on intensifying intervention through data-based instruction and attention to motivational processes.
- Sharon Vaughn: Investigates effective interventions for a diverse group of students with reading difficulties and students who are English language learners.
