Emergency Medicine Residency
The Emergency Medicine Residency at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is a three-year program that graduates eight physicians per year. Founded in 2012, the program is a dynamic, learner-centered residency that constantly pushes its educational programs forward to meet the residents' needs.
Program Overview
The program focuses on teaching, maintaining excellent attending-to-resident teaching ratios in the emergency department, and a multi-hospital training model that helps residents prepare to work in any setting upon graduation. Faculty and residents engage in scholarly activity to enhance their practice and contribute to the field.
Training Facilities
The program's training sites include:
- Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas: a 211-bed teaching hospital and Central Texas' only Level 1 trauma center for adults, serving an 11-county region.
- Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin: a 534-bed hospital and Austin's largest medical/surgical acute care center.
- Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas: a tertiary referral center for all of central Texas and one of only five Level 1 pediatric trauma centers in all of Texas.
- Ascension Seton Highland Lakes: a rural, critical access hospital where senior residents learn to push their limits.
Curriculum
The block curriculum features heavy exposure in emergency medicine at each of the four sites, including longitudinal experiences in pediatrics and the community.
Program Details
- The program accepts applications through the ResidencyCAS Centralized Application Service until October 1.
- Residents receive memberships to various professional organizations, including the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association.
- Residents have access to online and written emergency medicine resources, including Rosh Review, Up-to-Date, and Rosen's Emergency Medicine.
Leadership Training
The program places an emphasis on leadership training with special focuses on public advocacy and social medicine, emergency department administration, EMS, and pediatric emergency medicine.

The program is located in Austin, a city known for its live music festivals and venues, strong schools, tech-based economy, access to the outdoors, and active lifestyle.
