Introduction to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Program

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at the University of Calgary is designed to provide students with the background, competencies, and skills required to enter the nursing profession. This program replaces the existing Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program and offers a more integrated educational approach that incorporates developments in areas such as genomics, epigenetics, and artificial intelligence.


Program Structure and Duration

  • The BScN program is 120 credits and requires the same number of clinical practice hours as the BN program.
  • For students entering the BScN directly from high school, the reduced program length is 3.25 to 3.5 years.
  • Students should be prepared to have clinical placements in the early morning, evening, and on weekends.

Admission Requirements

  • Year 1 Admission: Available to applicants directly from high school and to students who have attended post-secondary but do not meet the admission requirements for the Bachelor of Nursing (BN, year 2).
  • Year 2 Admission: An advanced entry route for students with prior post-secondary coursework who meet the BScN transfer admission requirements.
  • Introduction to Nursing (NRSG 201) is required for entry into year two.
  • Students who do not present all post-secondary required courses for year two admission will be considered for year one.

Routes of Entry into the Program

  • Direct Entry – from High School: Year One, University of Calgary Campus, in-person, classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical practicum placements primarily within the City of Calgary and possibly surrounding areas.
  • Advanced Standing Route (Transfer and After-degree): Year One or Year Two (if all prerequisites are met), University of Calgary Campus, in-person, classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical practicum placements primarily within the City of Calgary and possibly surrounding areas.
  • Medicine Hat College (MHC) Collaborative Program: Year One, admission is initially to Medicine Hat College, in-person, classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical practicum placements primarily within and around Medicine Hat, Alberta.
  • Indigenous Community Route: Year One, admission to Year Two may be offered on a case-by-case basis when capacity allows, designated Indigenous community sites, in-person, classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical practicum placements at local clinical sites.
  • Rural Community Route: Year One, admission to Year Two may be offered on a case-by-case basis when capacity allows, designed rural sites, in-person, classroom, laboratory, simulation, and clinical practicum placements at local clinical sites.
