Program Overview


Master of Nursing: Course-based (MNCB) Program

The Master of Nursing: Course-based (MNCB) program is a part-time, online program designed for nurses seeking advanced practice in focused areas, including direct clinical practice, education, or health policy/leadership. This program addresses the increased prevalence of chronic illness, an aging population, workforce demands, and a shortage of prepared faculty members in academia.


Program Overview

The MNCB program is a laddered pathway program, requiring students to first complete the Advanced Nursing Practice I & Advanced Nursing Practice II Certificates Program prior to starting the MN Course-based program in September. Students will take one online course each semester and have a total of six years to complete the program.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the MNCB program, applicants must:


  • Be a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse holding a baccalaureate degree, normally in nursing
  • Complete the Graduate Certificates Advanced Nursing Practice I & II with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Provide evidence of active nursing registration in Alberta through the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) or active nursing registration in their province or territory of employment
  • Have completed one undergraduate course (3 units) in Statistics with a 'C' grade or better
  • For applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in English, submit a minimum:
    • TOEFL score of 97 (Internet-based test)
    • IELTS score of 7.0
    • PTE score of 68
    • CAEL overall score of 70 (no less than 70 on reading and writing sections)
  • Have an interview(s) with a faculty member, if required by the Faculty of Nursing

Technology Requirements

To successfully engage in learning experiences at the University of Calgary, students taking online, remote, and blended courses are required to have reliable access to:


  • A computer with a supported operating system, as well as the latest security and malware updates
  • A current and updated web browser
  • Webcam (built-in or external)
  • Microphone and speaker (built-in or external), or headset with microphone
  • Current antivirus and/or firewall software enabled
  • Broadband internet connection

Required Courses

Successful completion of:


  1. Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice I (12 units) (prior to admission to MN program)
  2. Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing Practice II (12 units) (prior to admission to MN program)
  3. Plus successful completion of the following core courses (12 units):
  • NURS 683 - Fall - Qualitative Designs and Analysis (3 units)
  • NURS 630 - Winter - Quantitative Research and Statistics (3 units)
  • NURS 690 - Spring - Cultivating Personal Leadership (3 units) OR
  • NURS 635 - Spring - Implementation Science for Health Professions (3 units) (only if previously completed NURS 660 - Fall - Cultivating Personal Leadership)
  • NURS 632 - Summer - Writing Proposals for the Nursing Profession (3 units)

Fees and Funding

Graduate students are expected to apply for internal and external awards, fellowships, and studentships for their program. Funding support is available through awards, faculty research programs, teaching assistantships, and research scholarships.
