Program Overview

Certificate in Engineering Entrepreneurship

The Certificate in Engineering Entrepreneurship is designed to develop an entrepreneurial mindset in students. The program consists of three tiers, each focusing on a different aspect of entrepreneurship.

Program Structure

The program is structured into three tiers:

  • Tier 1: Foundations: This tier focuses on project management, engineering design fundamentals, and the development of an entrepreneurial mindset. It is designed for undergraduate students registered in ENGG 200 as part of the common first-year program.
  • Tier 2: Development: This tier builds on the foundations established in Tier 1 and focuses on creating high-functioning teams, developing unique value propositions, funding, and communicating impactful ideas. Students must have completed Tier 1 to participate in Tier 2.
  • Tier 3: Excellence: The final tier focuses on validating ideas using customer and market intelligence, finalizing business models, and practicing pitches to panels of peers, academics, and potential clients. Students must have completed Tier 2 to participate in Tier 3.

Certificate Core Components

The core components of the certificate include:

  • Key Learning Components: Six core workshops per tier, each lasting 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Flexible Participation: Workshops are offered in the evenings, with supplementary online materials and takeaway templates.
  • Meaningful Connections: A kick-off event and collaboration with engineering peers.
  • Flagship Conference: A conference featuring 25+ speakers, 250+ attendees, with panels, keynotes, and workshops.

Requirements & Recognition

  • The certificate is offered to all full-time undergraduate Schulich School of Engineering students.
  • A minimum of 6 points per tier is required to pass, based on workshop attendance, assignments, and reflections.
  • Students receive a digital badge for completing each tier and a University of Calgary certificate of recognition upon completing all three tiers.

Real Impact

  • 97% of students rated the quality of workshops as Good to Excellent.
  • 76% of students rated the content as highly applicable to their engineering studies.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation within Alberta. The University strives to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way” on this land.
