PhD in Environmental Design (PhD) Program
The PhD in Environmental Design program is designed for individuals who wish to pursue advanced research in environmental design. The program is highly competitive, and admission is typically offered to applicants who can be matched with a supervisor.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission to the PhD in Environmental Design program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant design discipline is required.
- A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, calculated over the last 60 units (minimum of 20 courses) of university-level courses at the time of application.
- English language proficiency is required for applicants whose primary language is not English. This can be demonstrated through:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 105.
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.5.
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 62, or higher (Academic version).
- Canadian Academic English Language test (CAEL) score of 70 with no section less than 70.
- Academic Communication Certificate (ACC) score of A- in each course.
- Duolingo English Test score of 135 (accepted on a temporary basis).
- TOEFL IBT Home Edition score of 105 (accepted on a temporary basis).
Application Process
The application process for the PhD in Environmental Design program involves the following steps:

- Uploading application materials to the online UCalgary Student Centre via MyUCalgary.
- Paying the non-refundable application fee, which is CDN $125 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and CDN $145 for international students attending on a Study Permit.

- Transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended, including unofficial transcripts and, if applicable, provisional and degree certificates.
- A portfolio in PDF format, with a maximum size of 30 MB and 25 pages, including:
- 8.5" x 11" page size.
- First and last name on the cover page.
- Indication of the applicant’s specific role on group projects.
- Filename: Lastname2026.pdf.
- Examples of writing, such as a written essay, published paper, thesis, design project, or consulting report, submitted in digital form (one portable document .PDF file).
- References from three referees, with names and contact information, including at least two academic references and one from the master’s degree supervisor.
- A research proposal that describes the nature of the thesis research the applicant expects to undertake, including:
- Background.
- Research questions.
- Literature review.
- Research methodology.
- Broader impacts of the proposed research.
- A CV or resume that summarizes the applicant’s experiences in education, work, volunteering, and other relevant areas.
