Program Overview


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • Must be a resident of Alberta, as defined by the Province of Alberta, or have Indigenous status.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have protected person status under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Must meet the minimum academic requirements, including:
    • Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) with a minimum score of 495.
    • Completion of 10 required courses, including:
      • Two introductory biology courses with lab components.
      • Two introductory chemistry courses with lab components.
      • One introductory English course with a writing component.
      • One introductory organic chemistry course with a lab component.
      • One introductory statistics course.
      • One introductory biochemistry course.
      • One introductory genetics course.
      • One introductory ecology course.
  • Must have a minimum combined grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 over the last four full-time terms of undergraduate academic years.
  • Must demonstrate English language proficiency, either by:
    • Completing at least two full years of a degree program at an accredited university in a country recognized as English language proficiency exempt.
    • Achieving a score of 100 with a minimum score of 27 in each sub-score on the TOEFL iBT.
    • Achieving a minimum score of 8.0 with no bands below a 7.0 on the IELTS Academic.

Required Courses

The following courses are required for admission:


  • Two introductory biology courses with lab components (e.g., University of Calgary Course: BIOL 211, and one of BIOL 213 or BIOL 205).
  • Two introductory chemistry courses with lab components (e.g., University of Calgary Course: CHEM 201 and CHEM 203).
  • One introductory English course with a writing component (e.g., University of Calgary Course: ENGL 251).
  • One introductory organic chemistry course with a lab component (e.g., University of Calgary Course: CHEM 351).
  • One introductory statistics course (e.g., University of Calgary Course: STAT 205).
  • One introductory biochemistry course (e.g., University of Calgary Course: BCEM 341 or BCEM 393).
  • One introductory genetics course (e.g., University of Calgary Course: BIOL 311).
  • One introductory ecology course (e.g., University of Calgary Course: BIOL 313).

English Language Proficiency

Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency to be considered for admission. This can be done by:


  • Completing at least two full years of a degree program at an accredited university in a country recognized as English language proficiency exempt.
  • Achieving a score of 100 with a minimum score of 27 in each sub-score on the TOEFL iBT.
  • Achieving a minimum score of 8.0 with no bands below a 7.0 on the IELTS Academic.

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina.
