Program Structure

English Major

The English major is a good foundation for jobs in writing, research, or marketing, with more choice in selecting English options.


English Minor

A minor in English is an excellent choice to get a solid foundation in reading and writing components at work, ideal for students majoring in Business or another field.


English Honours

The English Honours program is excellent preparation for graduate thesis work. The Honours Project forms a distinctive part of the Honours program, preparing students for entering the scholarly community.


Honours Program

Overview

The Honours Project involves working with a faculty advisor to develop expertise in a chosen interest. Seminars provide shared guidance and experience in research and writing methods. Honours students are expected to present their research at the annual Honours Symposium.


Requirements

  1. Change of Program Application by February 1
  2. Secure a faculty supervisor in the Department of English
  3. Prepare a title and project description (maximum 1000 words)
  4. Prepare a summer reading list (recommended length, 1 page, MLA format)
  5. Submit the project proposal and reading list by May 30

ENGL 504 Requirements

Students must schedule their Honours Project in a twelve-month period, including a complete academic year.


ENGL 504 Seminar

The seminar is conducted as a workshop based on students' individual research and writing, aiming to develop specific research, writing, and professional skills.


ENGL 504 Honours Project

The Honours Project allows students to synthesize research skills and develop subject matter expertise while pursuing an individual interest. The project itself will be forty to fifty double-spaced, typed pages and should follow the most recent edition of the MLA handbook.
