Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently enter the world of nursing. The program requires the completion of 120 units of coursework and is delivered in a condensed format, taking 3.25 - 3.5 years to complete for students admitted to Year 1, and 2.25 - 2.50 years to complete for students admitted into Year 2.
Program Structure
The BScN program is a full-time professional program. Students admitted to Year 1 must successfully complete all 11 courses (33 units) as outlined prior to commencement of Year 2, unless approved by the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs.

- ACWR 303 – Academic Writing

- NRSG 201 – Introduction to Nursing
- NRSG 202 – Indigenous Health Studies
- Fall, winter or spring/summer semesters
- Junior Statistics Requirement (Statistics 205 recommended)
- Philosophy Requirement (Any PHIL course; Philosophy 249, 259, 313, or 347 recommended)

Open Option Courses
Open option courses allow students to explore additional areas of interest outside of their chosen degree. Students can take courses in various fields, such as dance, art history, languages, or astronomy.
Program Requirements
The BScN program requires students to complete all required courses and maintain a satisfactory academic standing. Students are responsible for activating their University of Calgary IT username and email account and checking their email regularly for important announcements from the Faculty of Nursing.
Enhancing the Nursing Program
Students can enhance their nursing program by participating in various activities, such as:
- Centre for Career & Personal Development: Find resources and online tools to help discover interests, values, and passions.
- Undergraduate Nursing Society (UNS): Be part of a group of students that endeavor to enrich the lives of nursing students both socially and academically.
Acknowledgement of Traditional Territories
The University of Calgary acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation within Alberta. The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina.
