Program Overview
Introduction to Dance Programs
The University of Calgary offers a range of dance programs that combine intensive studio training with inspired intellectual inquiry. These programs are designed to prepare students for career opportunities in dance performance, choreography, dance teaching, dance administration, and dance science.
Degrees Offered
The following degrees are offered in the dance program:
- BA in Dance
- BFA in Dance
- BKin/BA in Kinesiology and Dance
- Concurrent BA Dance (Dance Pedagogy concentration)/BEd
- Minor in Dance
Degree Requirements
Each degree has its own set of requirements, which can be found in the university calendar.
- BA in Dance: Combines practical studio courses in dance technique, composition, and improvisation, with theory courses in dance history, pedagogy, psychology, dramaturgy, management, design, and production.
- BFA in Dance: Focuses on studio training through concentrated courses in dance technique, choreography, improvisation, and performance.
- BKin/BA in Kinesiology and Dance: Highlights the relationships between sciences and the arts, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary perspectives in the study of movement.
- Concurrent BA in Dance (with a concentration in Dance Pedagogy) / BEd: Offers the opportunity to obtain both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree within five years.
- Minor in Dance: Designed for students who are completing another undergraduate degree but want to pursue their love of dance.

Program Details
BA in Dance
The BA in Dance program combines practical studio courses with theory courses. Students can choose to enhance their degree with a concentration in:
- Dance Pedagogy: Designed for students interested in a professional career as a dance teacher for all ages.
- Dance Production: Designed for students interested in a professional career in the dance industry.
BFA in Dance
The BFA in Dance program focuses on studio training and offers specialized training in dance for the camera, global dance forms, and site-specific dance.
Combined BKin (Kinesiology) / BA (Dance)
This five-year program emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary perspectives in the study of movement.
Concurrent BA in Dance (with a concentration in Dance Pedagogy) / BEd
This program offers the opportunity to obtain both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree within five years.
Minor in Dance
The Minor in Dance program is designed for students who are completing another undergraduate degree but want to pursue their love of dance.
Career Opportunities
As a Dance graduate, students will be prepared for career opportunities in such areas as dance performance, choreography, dance teaching, dance administration, and dance science. An Arts degree can also be used as a stepping-stone to graduate studies or other professional degrees in such areas as law, medicine, education, architecture, journalism, arts administration, business, or environmental design.
