Academic Information
Incoming students are offered the possibility of attending all the courses available in the two major areas of study:
- Italian language and culture for foreigners; dedicated to students who have no knowledge of Italian or who want to improve their linguistic skill till the advanced level including cultural aspects of Italian arts, culture, etc;
- Courses, in the areas of communication, advertising, tourism, promotion of the territory, international relations, etc.
The European credit system used ECTS credits. 6 ECTS = 1 UCalgary half-course equivalent (3 unit course). At the host university, students are typically expected to take 24-30 ECTS (12-15 UCalgary units) per semester.
Semester Dates
The academic year is divided into two semesters. The first semester (Fall) runs from late September to mid-late February and the second semester runs from late February to late July (including exam periods).
Costs & Funding
- Costs
- Exchange students pay their tuition and academic fees to the University of Calgary. Other expenses are paid directly to the service provider.
- Students should budget about 700-800 euros per month to cover basic living costs such as accommodation, food, books, and public transport.
- Funding
- Students can take their UCalgary funding with them on exchange.
- The office administers several awards, including the Global Access Fund and the Global Learning Award.
- Italian Study Abroad Award: One award, provided by Calgary's local Italian community and facilitated by the UCalgary Italian Department.
- Fogolâr Furlan di Calgary Scholarship in Italian Studies: One award, managed by The Calgary Foundation. Students who are Alberta residents working towards a major or minor in Italian Studies may be eligible.
Accommodation
- Italian universities are typically less campus-based, thus accommodation is often not directly affiliated with the university.
- The accommodation at the partner is off-campus.
- Accommodation (dormitory style) costs around 200 euros per month and homestay about 250 euros per month.
Eligibility & Application Requirements
- This exchange is open to regular, full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least 1 full year (10 courses) at the post-secondary level, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 (B-).
- Perugia offers Italian language courses at various levels. No Italian is required for beginners Italian courses. The other courses are taught in Italian.
- Applicants must have a command of Italian at minimum B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), or have completed at least two 300-level courses in Italian, or possess equivalent knowledge.
