Program Overview
The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Calgary offers a comprehensive program in Emergency Medicine, including various training sessions and courses for residents.
EM Ultrasound Residency Rotations
Emergency Medicine residents have the opportunity to receive training on Point-of-Care ultrasound as part of their curriculum, enhancing their skills to work in the current emergency medicine environment.
EDE I Course (Emergency Department Echo)
All junior residents complete the EDE I course in their first year, within the first two months of residency. This course is the initial step in becoming an Independent Practitioner of emergency department ultrasound (IP certified).
Junior Emergency Ultrasound Block
The junior ultrasound block is designed to assist junior residents in becoming IP certified during their first year of residency. Preceptors supervise 2-3 EDE scans per shift, with the goal of achieving 50 aorta, FAST, cardiac, and early obstetrical scans over the course of the block.
Senior Ultrasound Curriculum
The senior ultrasound curriculum teaches advanced applications of point-of-care ultrasound in the emergency department, including:
- Advanced cardiac views
- Gallbladder ultrasound
- Pleural and lung ultrasound
- Volume assessment
- Regional anesthesia
- Deep venous thrombosis These sessions are held bi-monthly on academic days.
