Program Overview

Program Overview

The Paediatrics Fellowship is a one-year program designed to provide trainees with comprehensive academic and clinical educational opportunities in the perioperative management of pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia.

Program Details

  • The program offers exposure to the full range of surgical specialties, including thoracic, ENT/airway, neuro, craniofacial, orthopedic, spine, urological, and renal transplant.
  • Fellows will have excellent exposure to neonatal anesthesia, including index cases.
  • The program includes a busy acute and complex/chronic pain program, as well as a thriving regional anesthesia practice.
  • One to two months of pediatric cardiac anesthesia exposure is achieved through associations with the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton (University of Alberta) and the BC Children's hospital in Vancouver (University of British Columbia).
  • Elective time in pediatric intensive care is available for interested fellows.

Program Structure

  • The program allows for protected time for non-clinical work and research.
  • There are weekly departmental academic rounds and weekly educational rounds for residents and fellows.
  • One to two fellowship positions are offered per year, typically starting each July.
  • Alternative start dates can be considered.

Eligibility and Application

  • The application deadline is January 31 for fellowships beginning on July 1 of the following year.
  • If the deadline has passed, interested applicants can inquire about possible remaining openings.

Program Faculty

  • The program is led by Dr. Scott Else, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Alberta Children’s Hospital.
  • Dr. Else earned his medical degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and completed his anesthesia residency at the University of Calgary.
  • He received fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard University.

Program Location

  • The University of Calgary is located in the heart of Southern Alberta, on the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7.
  • The city of Calgary is home to the Métis Nation within Alberta, and the university is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina.
