Program Overview
Perioperative Medicine Fellowship
The Perioperative Medicine Fellowship is a unique program in the rapidly developing field of Perioperative Medicine, offering fellows the opportunity to explore risk stratification and mitigation from the time of surgical planning through to the patient’s transition back to the community.
Program Overview
Anesthesia Perioperative Medicine fellows train primarily at the Foothills Medical Centre, with additional time at other sites as elective choices dictate. There are six core perioperative medicine blocks scheduled throughout the year. Additional core blocks include point of care ultrasound, transfusion medicine/patient blood management, medicine consults, and acute pain medicine. Three elective rotations are available during the year. These may include subspecialty internal medicine rotations, intensive care outreach, transitional pain, regional anesthesia, research, and others.
Clinical Experience
Clinical experience during the core perioperative medicine rotations will focus on the assessment, optimization, and management of complex patients throughout their perioperative period. The role of the anesthesiologist outside of the intraoperative phase of care is also a focus. The program is tailored to individual interests, and fellows will have the opportunity to work with experienced professionals in the field.
Educational Experiences
Educational experiences will help fellows become leaders in the area of perioperative medicine in their future practices. They will be active members of the Pre-Admission Clinic Advisory Committee, the Complex Surgical Case Committee, and the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Committee. Opportunities also exist for credit courses, such as biostatistics or fundamentals of epidemiology, through the Department of Community Health Sciences.
