Program Overview
Program Overview
The Perioperative Ultrasound program is designed to provide trainees with academic and clinical educational opportunities using perioperative multimodal/multifunctional ultrasound technology to optimize anesthetic management.
Program Description
This program includes training in cardiac echocardiography (both transesophageal and transthoracic), multi-organ point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), vascular access, and fundamental regional techniques. Following the training, fellows will have an advanced understanding of the underlying principles of ultrasound physics and the functioning of ultrasound probes and machines. They will also have experience applying this technology to provide comprehensive patient care.
Program Structure
The program follows a competency-based format, allowing the fellow to master the basics of each ultrasound skill while dedicating additional clinical or academic time to areas of interest. Incorporating three Calgary hospitals training sites, fellows will experience a wide array of surgical cases and opportunities to perform ultrasound-enhanced anesthetic techniques under the guidance of many of our attendings with ultrasound expertise.
