Computer Game Development Program

The University of Calgary offers a unique concentration in Computer Game Development, providing students with a solid foundation in Computer Science and a thorough background in all aspects of computer game development and design.


Concentration Description

This concentration is one of the first university-level computer game development courses in the world and one of the only programs of its kind in Canada. The philosophy is to provide students with a solid foundation in Computer Science while giving them a thorough background in all aspects of computer game development and design.


Concentration Requirements

To complete a concentration in Computer Game Development, there are some restrictions on the option courses that students can choose in their degree program. Students are required to take a multi-disciplinary range of courses stemming from Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Fine Arts, and Communication Studies.


Overview of Concentration Details

  • Lectures for the CPSC 585 capstone course are given by representatives from an active Games Development Company as well as Computer Science faculty members.
  • Utilizing tools that are currently being used in the Gaming Industry, students work in teams to collaborate and collectively work on an actual game that is to be created during the term.

Program Location

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation within Alberta. The University acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy, the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda.
