The Online Radiologist Assistant Master’s in Radiologic Science Program

The UNC School of Medicine’s online master’s in radiologic science program prepares students to become advanced-practice providers specifically trained in medical imaging procedures and patient management.


Program Overview

The 24-month UNC curriculum provides a radiologist-directed clinical preceptorship delivered through distance education, web-based instruction, and on-campus seminars.


Learning Outcomes

The program, curriculum, teaching methods, and philosophy are designed to:


  • Develop competent, effective radiologist assistants.
  • Support development of skills necessary to practice as an integral team member in a radiology practice.
  • Promote development of integrative, critical thinking, and communication skills to include written, oral, and electronic discourse.

Admissions

There is one start date per year for the UNC-Chapel Hill Radiologist Assistant program. All applicants are reviewed according to the following criteria:


  • Clarity and quality of applicant data form information
  • Past academic performance, academic progress and promise
  • Knowledge of the field
  • Supportive references

Admissions Criteria

  • Completion of an accredited medical radiography program with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Baccalaureate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA (may apply while still enrolled; completion date must be prior to RA program enrollment date).
  • Current ARRT Certification in Radiography.
  • BCLS certification (American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted. All students must acquire ACLS certification prior to participating in any invasive procedures).
  • Minimum one year full-time experience in direct patient care, after passing the ARRT Radiography exam (applicants with additional years of practice and/or diversified experience may be more competitive).

The Online Learning Experience

Students participate in a 24-month distance education program consisting of web-based instruction and a radiologist-directed clinical preceptorship.


  • The off-campus clinical preceptorship includes a minimum of 1,792 clinical hours.
  • Students should be prepared to identify a radiology practice to serve the role of preceptor.
  • The identified radiology practice must include American Board of Radiology (ABR) certified radiologists who can instruct and assess the RA student’s competence while working and learning under their supervision.
