Program Overview

The Internship and Study Semester in Asia Pacific (ISSAP) program is a unique opportunity for students to combine global business courses with a hands-on international internship experience. This program is run through a long-standing partner, Global Academic Ventures, who provides housing, course instruction, internship matching, extracurricular programming, and 24/7 on-site support.

Program Details

• Program Location: Sydney, Australia, with internship options in Auckland, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Sydney
• Program Duration: Spring semester (January 13 – May 9, 2025) or Fall semester (August 24 – December 20, 2025)
• Language of Instruction: English
• GPA Requirement: 3.00
• Program Options: Direct Enroll

Academics

• Students will take 3 Business courses in Sydney, Australia, during the equivalent of Mod 1 or Mod 3
• 8-week credit-bearing internship in a location of choice within the Asia Pacific region
• Courses taken on this program will transfer back to UNC Pass (grade of C and above)/Fail (grade below C)
• Pass grades do not affect UNC GPA, but future employers and graduate schools will also look at study abroad transcripts, so grades are important
• Students will transfer back 3.0 UNC credits for every 3-credit course on this program
• Expected to take four or five courses worth 3.0 credits each during the semester
• Program fulfills the Experiential Education requirement or the High Impact Experience requirement

Program Logistics

• Orientation: Sunday, January 8 (Spring) or Sunday, August 24 (Fall)
• Block 1 Classes: January 9 – February 5 (Spring) or August 25 – September 21 (Fall)
• Block 2 Classes: February 6 – March 3 (Spring) or September 22 – October 17 (Fall)
• Spring Break: March 4 – 10 (note that students are responsible for independent housing during this time)
• Fall Break: October 18-24 (note that students are responsible for independent housing during this time)
• Internship: Arrive to internship location by March 11 (Spring) or October 25 (Fall) with internship orientation on March 12 (Spring) or October 26 (Fall)

  • 12 credit hours of Business course enrollment, including the 3-credit hour internship course

Housing

• Shared accommodation organized by Global Academic Ventures during the class and internship components
• Housing during the class component is located close to Darling Harbour, adjacent to the Sydney city center
• Students are responsible for independent housing during spring or fall break

Funding and Scholarships

• The Undergraduate Business Program offers both merit and financial-need-based scholarships to support students who wish to study abroad
• Average merit scholarship amounts for this program range between $500-$1500
• Financial-need scholarship amounts will be determined by supplemental UNC Office of Scholarships and Student Aid information
• Study abroad scholarship applications are embedded in the global program application

Travel Documents

• Students must have a valid passport with an expiration date at least 6 months after the program's scheduled end date
• Visa requirements will be guided by Global Academic Ventures
• Health Insurance Policy approved by the Australian government (OSHC) must be purchased prior to submitting visa application

Withdrawal Policy

• Once a student accepts their offer/enrolls on a study abroad program, the spot will be considered filled and will not be offered to another student
• Students who withdraw from UBP Global are responsible for non-recoverable costs, including the Global Programs Administrative Fee
• Student account will be assessed charges to cover any/all amounts that Kenan-Flagler UBP Global programs has committed or paid on behalf of the student and are non-recoverable at the time of withdrawal.
